So far we only have a rough idea of the multiplayer mode of Cyberpunk 2077. In the following article we will provide you with the most important information.

  • The developers of Cyberpunk 2077 changed their business strategy, which also affects multiplayer
  • Multiplayer development is not currently a high priority for CD Projekt Red
  • Multiplayer will probably not be a standalone game, but consists of online features
  • Multiplayer for Cyberpunk and / or The Witcher surely will little by little releasing
  • At the moment the main focus is on updates and patches for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

What will Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer look like? A lot has happened since the game’s launch: In an investor call on March 30, 2021, developer CD Projekt announced that the business strategy would be changed. And there are still many unanswered questions about multiplayer.

In the following article we summarize all the information known so far Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer together: what has already been officially confirmed and which is currently just speculation.

This is known for Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer

Standalone multiplayer or online features?

Since the change of strategy of CD Projekt unclear if the multiplayer will appear as a standalone game at all – or if it’s a Cyberpunk 2077 expansion that brings online elements with it. CEO Adam Kicinski said:

We are changing our approach, we definitely want to have online elements in our next games, but step by step. We are working on adding such features to our single-player games, but we are not working on releasing the next game as an online experience. So we’re going to enhance our single player games with online experiences.

No one wants to comment on plans that extend further into the future. When asked, CD Projekt confirmed that they are still planning “some form of multiplayer” for Cyberpunk 2077, and that “online experiences” in this case mean that players can play together in some way. But there are no other details.

NextGen patches and updates for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 still take precedence. So it’ll be a while before we hear anything new about multiplayer – and the project hasn’t yet appeared in the new roadmap for 2022 anyway.

Release: When will multiplayer appear?

Multiplayer is probably still a long way off: After a content push originally planned for 2021 with a new roadmap for 2022, multiplayer for Cyberpunk 2077 is likely a long time coming. Because the promised free DLCs and extras arrive later than expected. Multiplayer itself is not even mentioned in this new guide.

This only confirms official statements from January 2020. At the time, CD Projekt Red board member Michal Nowakowski stated that a 2021 release was “highly unlikely”. Therefore, the resulting predictions assumed an earlier release in 2022. This could also be delayed by the hacker attack and necessary patches.

Planned release step by step: A more recent CD Projekt Red investor conference from late November 2021 has now revealed that CD Projekt Red will release multiplayer modes for Cyberpunk and The Witcher little by little want to implement. Therefore, there probably shouldn’t be a release date on which multiplayer modes will be fully and finally available, but they will be fleshed out over time and expanded upon later.

There is currently no trace of multiplayer in the Cyberpunk 2077 roadmap.

Real Money Purchases: Will There Be Microtransactions?

Scheduled paid content: Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer microtransactions have already been confirmed in an old quarterly report. However, the developer is still keeping a low profile about their exact nature. Therefore, it is not known if it will only be about skins or if other things will be offered with real money.

It said these should “make players happy” and would also be “non-aggressive”. This suggests that Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer will work without Pay2Win mechanisms or in-game advantages that can be obtained for real money.

However, for now, this is still just speculation.

In an RPG with a cyberpunk setting, skins for your character would certainly be ideal.

Rumors, leaks and predictions

Here is the possible information about Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer, which was either revealed or found using data mining. This means that the developer has not yet officially confirmed them.

Therefore, it is quite possible that this information will change before the release of multiplayer or be only partially true. So enjoy the following lines carefully!

DLCs: Any expansions planned?

Model similar to GTA Online: As analytics company M Science (via TheGamer ) claims to have read from CD Projekt Red’s comments, Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer mode could be expanded to include DLC or free seasons. A principle not dissimilar to Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto Online should be followed.

In concrete terms, this would mean that Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer expansions would be free and that further development of the mode would be funded by microtransactions – as mentioned above.

Therefore, not only expansions are planned for Cyberpunk 2077’s single-player campaign. Everything we know so far about free DLCs and paid expansions for Story Mode can be found in our separate article on the topic:

Game Modes: What’s there to play?

Deathmatch: Dataminers found a number of text fragments that indicate the existence of a lethal mode. Traditionally, in this PvP mode everyone fights against everyone and your goal is to be the player with the most kills at the end of the match.

robberies: The second game mode found in the files, judging by the name, can have you doing some heists. Further details of this mode are still somewhat imprecise. So you seem to meet other players in a gathering area before the actual heist begins.

It is not known exactly how it will happen. It’s also not yet clear if you’ll be fighting other players in matches – eg. PvP – or will you compete cooperatively against the AI in PvE style.

Is there a co-op mode? The MP component was initially said to be “treated as a separate game”. We currently do not anticipate that you will be able to play the single player campaign with one or more friends. However, this does not exclude the possibility of cooperative missions in online mode. However, concrete indications for this are still missing.

If Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer is indeed based on GTA Online, it would make sense to split players into specific roles.

If Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer is indeed based on GTA Online, it would make sense to split players into specific roles.

Classes: Will there be different roles?

Selection of ready-made classes: The information that there must be at least four classes also comes from the game files themselves. Apparently, at least in Heist mode, you can choose between the following four classes – it remains to be seen if there will be more:

  • solo
  • killer
  • Netrunner
  • Technician

Each role seems to be unique. Because some parts of the text indicate that the game will not start as long as a character is represented several times. Therefore, during a heist mission, there seems to be a balance between the different abilities so that each player can take their role in the heist. Again, the parallels with GTA Online are obvious.

Online Matches: Are there dedicated servers?

Multiplayer apparently Peer2Peer: According to dataminers, there are indications that Cyberpunk 2077 will not use dedicated servers. Links would be made directly between players. However, it could also just be leftover development code.
